Tohatsu started production in Japan in 1922. In 1956 Tohatsu produced the first outboard motor, a 1.5hp air cooled.

Tohatsu have developed their products in the harsh environment of the Japanese oceans. They still hold the world record for the smallest outboard to cross the Atlantic.
